Welcome!

I've always thought Singing Time was a magical time. The best part of Primary. Since being called as Primary Chorister, I've tried to make Singing Time a way to make church and learning a joyful, fun time for children. These are my adventures as Primary Chorister.

Battleship

Play like regular battleship, only the kids are playing against you, you aren't playing against them.

I made a posterboard and marked out 7 x 9 squares. The entire out ring of squares are for the numbering system. Up and down will be A-E, and along the top and bottom you'll label them 1 - 7. Therefore the playing area is only 5 x 7. Just enough!

I painted my poster and laminated it. I also cut out colored circles and red X's and laminated them. The red X's show which spots are duds, and the colored circles show ships. Each color represents a different ship (verse). I have three ships and actually some sea mines. The sea mines are always green, and they are fun songs. The black ship is the verse that needs the most work. The other ships are blue and orange, which each represent a different verse. If a song only has one or two verses, you can use the other 'ships' for other song verses.

I attached velcro to each spot on the poster, and to the backs of each game piece. This makes it super easy to stick pieces on and rip them off for the next game.

Call a kid to pick a spot (ex A5). You will have a card that shows where everything is, and will mark the spot they pick with a ship color or an X respectively. Once they 'sink' a ship, you no longer sing that verse. At the end of the game, you can leave it at that or sing the entire song.

Love this idea, I used it to review "He Sent His Son". Each ship represented a different question and answer part of the song. We had 5 ships, if they sunk a ship I had a silly hat I made that the child got to choose who was to where the silly hat until the next shyip was sunk. Loved the idea and a good way to repeat the same part of the song until they knew it better.
Thanks for the idea.

This worked great! I used it the week before the 4th of July to review "The Holy Ghost." I asked the children if they could see submarines with their eyes when they looked out at the ocean? I then asked them if they knew how sailors could locate submarines? I then explained that during WWII they used sonar (sound waves)to find the submarines. I asked them if they could see the Holy Ghost? We then talked about how we needed to listen for the still small voice and that we could feel the Holy Ghost in our hearts and minds.
The game was a great way to review the four parts of the song and every child got several turns to try to find the submarines. We sang "My Flag" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" for the sea mines. I passed out little flags to wave.
The game was a big hit. I am sure I will use it again sometime. Thanks for the great ideas!

Love the idea and i am now in the process of making it. If you have the file for the smaller chart for blocking it out so we can follow the hits and misses. Thanks and keep up the great posting.

does this work as well with the jr primary? DO they understand how to play? I love the idea and will use it in the near future!

Mary, that's an awesome way to tie in the game with the lesson! I love it!

Anon, I don't think I do have the file for the smaller chart, I just make up something quickly in MS Excel, sorry.

April and Jason, yes, the smaller kids had no problem understanding and playing this game. I got them to come up and point to the square they wanted instead of calling out the posision, though.

I don't know if you still check your comments or not, but I can't get my poster to look even HALF as nice as yours! What kind of paint did you use? Mine is leaving huge streaks.
